Wales Withdraws Support for Infantino’s FIFA Re-election Bid

Wales Withdraws Support for Infantino’s FIFA Re-election Bid

FIFA president Gianni Infantino has lost the public backing of the Football Association of Wales ahead of his bid for re-election for the 2027–2031 term. The Welsh body said it no longer had confidence in Infantino’s governance, leadership, communication and judgement. Its decision followed the collapse of a proposed FIFA commercial venture that would have allowed private investors to buy a stake linked to major competitions, including the men’s and women’s World Cups. The proposal was reportedly expected to deliver up to $40 million to each of FIFA’s 211 member associations if approved. It was later abandoned after opposition from UEFA and other football bodies. England is also expected to withdraw its support, while CONCACAF and the Asian Football Confederation have called for closer scrutiny and greater transparency. FIFA’s congress is scheduled to hold in Rabat, Morocco, in March 2027.
