Atlético Madrid coach Diego Simeone has backed Lionel Messi to win the 2026 Ballon d’Or, citing the Argentine’s reported World Cup performances. Simeone said Messi was his clear choice ahead of other contenders including Lamine Yamal, Kylian Mbappé and Harry Kane. The report also says Atlético Madrid forwards Ademola Lookman and Julián Álvarez were left out of the 30-man shortlist. Lookman was previously nominated after his standout Europa League final display for Atalanta.
