American Doctor Declared Ebola-Free After Treatment in Germany
A US physician infected with the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo has fully recovered and been discharged from a German hospital, health officials confirmed. Dr. Peter Stafford was airlifted from central Africa to Charité University Hospital in Berlin on May 20. He received specialised care and experimental therapies for the rare variant while in one of Europe’s leading high-containment facilities. By the end of May, medical assessments showed no traces of the virus in his body. Authorities lifted his isolation order after confirming he no longer posed any transmission risk. His wife and four children, who were identified as high-risk contacts, also underwent observation in Berlin. None developed symptoms during the monitoring period, officials say, as efforts continue to contain the outbreak in Congo.
