Why Nigeria’s Democracy Fails When We Don’t Play Our Part

Many Nigerians call the country “bad” and label the government useless. Yet these critics are also the citizens who shape Nigeria. Democracy is government by the people. We elect leaders, hold office and benefit from the system. Blaming everyone else means excluding ourselves from the failure we condemn. We often point to bad leadership, religious influences or external forces. But the same behaviors repeat when we refuse to change our own habits. If democracy hasn’t delivered, it is not the idea that’s flawed but our lack of personal responsibility. Nigeria can only thrive when citizens commit to better civic practices.
