Palm Oil Adulteration: Who Protects Nigerians From Unsafe Food in Open Markets?
Reports that some palm oil may be mixed with dyes have renewed concerns about the safety of foods sold in Nigerian markets. As a daily kitchen staple, palm oil should be safe, traceable and properly monitored. NAFDAC says it regulates processed and packaged foods through registration, inspections, laboratory testing, surveillance and enforcement. However, unbranded staples such as loose palm oil and fufu sold in open markets can be difficult to trace because they often lack labels or producer details. The issue goes beyond online claims and panic. Authorities need to carry out proper testing, communicate confirmed findings clearly and strengthen monitoring across markets. Consumers also need clear channels for reporting suspected adulterated food products. Food safety should not end simply because a product is sold without formal packaging.
