Southern Africa Launches Joint Bid to Host AFCON 2028
South Africa, Botswana and Zimbabwe have submitted a united bid to host the 2028 Africa Cup of Nations. The proposal, backed by COSAFA, aims to bring the continent’s flagship football tournament back to the Southern African region. COSAFA President Tariq Babitseng highlighted the region’s strong infrastructure and alignment with CAF President Patrice Motsepe’s vision of rotating host duties across Africa. South Africa has prior experience hosting AFCON in 1996 and the FIFA World Cup in 2010, while Botswana and Zimbabwe look to showcase their growing facilities and organisational capabilities. CAF will evaluate bids on stadium readiness, training sites, accommodation, transport and overall logistics. If successful, the joint bid would mark a significant return of AFCON to Southern Africa and boost football development and tourism across the three nations.
