Kwankwaso: Yar’Adua’s Death Deepened Zoning Crisis, NDC Eyes South for 2027
Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso says the death of former President Umar Musa Yar’Adua disrupted Nigeria’s power rotation arrangement between North and South. He made the remarks on Arise TV while defending the NDC’s decision to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to the South. Kwankwaso and Peter Obi formally joined the NDC in early May after leaving their previous parties amid internal disputes. At its Abuja convention, the party officially ratified a southern candidate for the 2027 election. Yar’Adua’s 2010 death led to Goodluck Jonathan completing the term and later winning a full term in 2011. Kwankwaso acknowledged that views on zoning often depend on how parties calculate past regional tenures. The zoning principle remains a sensitive issue in Nigerian politics. Major parties regularly adjust their tickets between North and South to maintain balance and stability ahead of presidential contests.
