When Moses Struck the Angel of Death: A Surprising Hadith

Islam has its fair share of legends that many feel were forced on believers. You might recall imams claiming a thousand-year-old corpse would rise at Muhammad’s name. These tales have led some in Gen Z to question certain narratives. Here is a hadith from Sahih al-Bukhari (1339). It recounts how the angel of death approached Moses, only for Moses to strike him and damage one eye. The angel returned to Allah, who restored the eye and instructed him to tell Moses to place his hand on an ox’s back. Moses would then live for as many years as there were hairs under his hand. When Moses asked for death, Allah granted him a final resting place near the Sacred Land.
