UEFA Bans and Fines Guendouzi, Greenwood After Fenerbahce-Lyon Clash
UEFA has sanctioned Fenerbahce players Matteo Guendouzi and Mason Greenwood over the disorder that followed their side’s 2-1 Champions League qualifying win against Lyon. Guendouzi received a four-match European ban, with two matches suspended for a year, and a €50,000 fine. UEFA said he insulted people at the match, provoked spectators and breached basic conduct rules. He will miss Fenerbahce’s opening league-phase matches against Roma and Aston Villa. Greenwood was given a one-match suspended ban and fined €30,000 for breaching basic conduct rules. Fenerbahce and Lyon were also fined €50,000 each after UEFA found both teams had violated general conduct rules. Guendouzi said Lyon supporters had insulted his family and argued that players should be allowed to celebrate after matches.
