Adopt a Merit-Based System to Transform Nigeria’s Political Leadership
I believe Nigeria’s political parties rely too much on money and godfathers instead of proven ability. Leaders should rise through party-accredited Leadership Schools. They must pass competitive exams and serve at ward and local government levels before aiming for higher offices. Aspiring governors would need a full LG chairmanship term and a Level 3 exam. The Independent National Electoral Commission would verify qualifications and disqualify unqualified aspirants. Defection would carry merit-based costs, forcing officials to rebuild seniority if they switch parties. We can phase in these rules over successive election cycles, starting with local government contests and eventually applying standards to the presidency.
