Amaechi Insists He Never Stole Public Funds but Admits Office Perks

Rotimi Amaechi says he never deliberately siphoned public funds during his tenure as Rivers State governor and later as transport minister. He admits that officeholders enjoy privileges, such as easier access to loans and other financial advantages. Amaechi stressed: “Have you knowingly gone to take people’s money? No.” He added that while he is “80 per cent” serious about not stealing, political influence inevitably brings some perks. He criticised Nigeria’s political class for enriching themselves instead of investing in job-creating sectors. He also recounted rejecting suggestions to take kickbacks from contracts worth trillions of naira, insisting his lifestyle reflects a clean record.
