US to Cancel Passports of Parents Owing Over $100,000 in Child Support
The US State Department will begin revoking passports for thousands of parents who owe significant unpaid child support. Starting May 8, holders owing at least $100,000 will lose their travel documents. The measure affects around 2,700 passport holders based on data from Health and Human Services. Soon, the program will expand to anyone owing more than $2,500, under a long-standing law from 1996. State agencies are still compiling figures for this wider group, which could number in the many thousands. Under the new policy, the State Department will be notified of all overdue payments above $2,500 and will revoke passports accordingly. Parents can regain travel privileges once they settle their arrears. Officials say the policy has already prompted many to clear their debts and is a “powerful tool” for enforcing support obligations.
