Thousands in South Africa Protest, Demand Undocumented Migrants Leave

Thousands in South Africa Protest, Demand Undocumented Migrants Leave — 1 of 2
1 / 2

Thousands marched across South Africa on Tuesday to demand that undocumented migrants leave the country. Citizen-led groups set an unofficial June 30 deadline and rallied supporters in Johannesburg, Durban and other cities. Police and soldiers were deployed after isolated clashes and reports of stone-throwing and looting. Protesters blamed foreign nationals for high unemployment and crime. Many carried traditional Zulu spears, whips and shields. Several people were arrested and at least four migrants from Mozambique, Ethiopia and Malawi have died amid growing tensions. As pressure mounted, nations including Nigeria, Ghana and Zimbabwe organised voluntary repatriation flights and buses. More than 25,000 foreign nationals have been processed for departure in recent weeks, with thousands flown or bused to neighbouring countries.
