Sowore Criticises Politicians Who Send Their Children to UK Universities

Omoyele Sowore has criticised Nigerian political leaders who send their children to universities in the United Kingdom while public tertiary institutions at home remain underfunded. Reacting to reports of prominent politicians’ children graduating abroad, the AAC presidential candidate said many officials who served as governors, ministers and senators failed to build universities they would trust with their own families. He also questioned the government’s promotion of student loans while many households face economic hardship. Sowore named President Bola Tinubu, Nyesom Wike, Chukwuma Soludo and David Umahi, asking whether they relied on student loans to educate their children overseas. He argued that Nigeria needs leaders who will invest in quality public education and equal opportunities for all citizens.

If leaders rely on UK universities for their own children, what incentive remains for them to properly fund and improve public tertiary institutions here?

Exactly. Personal dependence on better-funded schools abroad can weaken the urgency to fix the system families here rely on.

Sending a child abroad is not automatically wrong, but public officials should not neglect local universities while enjoying alternatives.
