Why Removing Presidents Has Never Solved Nigeria’s Problems
I’ve studied Nigeria’s political history since independence and noticed a clear pattern: Nigerians have protested every leader in power—from Tafawa Balewa’s era of bad governance to today’s administration. Despite calls for good governance, the focus often shifts to removing the sitting president. Each transition has sparked renewed hopes, only for the same cycle of frustration to repeat. The real obstacle isn’t a particular president but the cabals and vested interests that control our institutions—and our own habit of turning on each leader. True progress will come when citizens unite to support reforms and hold those power brokers accountable, rather than endlessly campaigning to unseat whoever occupies Aso Rock.
