Did Jesus’ Command to the Rich Ruler Contradict the Ten Commandments?
In Luke 18:18–23, a wealthy ruler asks Jesus what he must do to inherit eternal life. Jesus reminds him of the commandments, then tells him to sell his possessions, give to the poor and follow him. The ruler becomes sad because he is very wealthy. The passage goes on to stress how difficult it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God. I believe the God of the original Torah is the only true God and that the Ten Commandments are sufficient guidance. If people choose to follow Jesus’ instruction here, they should be prepared to sell what they have, give to the poor and follow him.
