Emir of Zazzau Urges Families to Curb Lavish Aso-ebi and Makeup Costs at Weddings

Emir of Zazzau Urges Families to Curb Lavish Aso-ebi and Makeup Costs at Weddings

Emir Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli warned families against extravagant spending on cosmetics and aso-ebi during wedding celebrations. Speaking at a Muslim organisation’s 20th anniversary event in Abuja, he urged that those funds be redirected to help the poor and needy. He pointed out the contrast between opulent ceremonies—where some spend hundreds of thousands on fabrics and makeup—and the many who struggle to afford three square meals. The emir said he personally refuses to invest in such expenses and appealed to parents to scale down unnecessary costs. He also called for practical skills education alongside academic lessons, renewal of scholarship schemes for disadvantaged students, and urged youths to embrace technology. The anniversary event celebrated two decades of supporting the needy and included awards for students who excelled in an essay competition.

The Emir's idea is noble, but telling families how much they should spend on aso-ebi and makeup might feel intrusive at personal events.

Couples could set suggested budgets for aso-ebi and cosmetics, then donate any savings directly to a local charity in need.
