Security Forces Clash With Itsekiri Youths Over INEC Ward Boundaries in Warri

The Itsekiri Grassroot Coalition has rejected INEC’s proposed ward delineation for Warri Federal Constituency. They say the plan undermines the political identity and representation of the Itsekiri people in a region vital to Nigeria’s oil and gas economy. In a statement, the coalition condemned what it called a deliberate attempt to diminish Itsekiri electoral standing. They also raised alarm over reported attacks on Ugborodo/Itsekiri Youths who peacefully protested the contested boundaries and are demanding a public apology and an independent investigation. Among their demands are the immediate withdrawal of the proposed wards, a fresh and inclusive delineation process, and accountability for violence against protesters. The group has called on President Tinubu, the National Assembly, civil society organisations, and traditional institutions to intervene before tensions escalate.

How might the proposed ward boundaries affect Itsekiri representation in Warri's political landscape and local oil revenue decisions?

This matters a lot. Adjusted boundaries could shift local voices and share of oil revenue councils allot to Warri native groups.

It seems odd that INEC would redraw boundaries in such an oil-rich region without broader community buy-in or detailed demographic transparency.

Local pressure groups could document points of disagreement and formally petition INEC to revisit the ward delineation process with clear public hearings.
