US Proposes $70,000 OPT Fee, Raising Concerns for Nigerian Students
The US Department of Homeland Security has proposed a $70,000 fee for each initial Optional Practical Training application filed for an international student. Schools would also pay $30,000 for every renewal under the proposal. OPT allows eligible foreign graduates, including Nigerians, to gain work experience in roles related to their courses. Graduates can usually receive up to one year of authorisation, while eligible STEM graduates may obtain a further two years. DHS said the measure is intended to curb fraud and misuse of the programme. Higher education and business groups argue that it could deter international students and limit employers’ access to skilled workers. The proposed rule will be open for public comment for 60 days and may face legal challenges before it can take effect.
