Would Today’s Church Leaders Give the Rich Young Ruler the Same Advice?
In Luke 18, a wealthy ruler asks Jesus what he must do to inherit eternal life. Jesus reminds him of the commandments, then challenges him to sell his possessions, give to the poor and follow Him. The ruler leaves saddened because he has great wealth. Jesus then teaches how difficult it can be for the rich to enter God’s kingdom. Would many priests, pastors and bishops today give the same instruction to a wealthy member? The passage invites Christians to reflect on wealth, generosity, discipleship and God’s grace.
