Nigeria Spent ₦33bn Importing Apples and Strawberries in Six Months
Nigeria imported apples and strawberries valued at ₦33 billion in the first half of 2026, according to National Bureau of Statistics foreign trade data. Imports were valued at ₦10.38 billion in the first quarter and ₦22.65 billion in the second quarter, with South Africa listed as a major source. Farmers say apples can grow in parts of Plateau State, but production remains limited due to poor access to improved seedlings, fertiliser, agrochemicals, training and reliable markets. They argue that better support could increase local supply and make apples more affordable. Strawberry producers face an additional challenge: transport. Fresh berries spoil quickly, and farmers say costly logistics, poor roads, delays and limited air cargo options lead to major losses before the fruit reaches consumers in cities such as Lagos. The situation highlights how investment in cold-chain storage, transport and farm inputs could help Nigeria reduce fruit imports and limit post-harvest losses.
