Lagos Residents Battle Floods, Gridlock and Higher Fares as Rains Persist

Persistent rainfall in Lagos is disrupting daily life for commuters, traders and students. Many residents now leave home before dawn, rely on weather forecasts and carry rain boots, raincoats or waterproof bags to cope with sudden downpours. Commuters say rainfall worsens traffic congestion and pushes up transport fares. One Aguda resident said she can spend almost twice her usual daily transport budget when it rains, while an Ogba resident said she leaves home as early as 4 a.m. or stays late at work to avoid gridlock and excessive fuel use. Traders are recording mixed results. Sellers of umbrellas and emergency raincoats report stronger demand during rush hours, but flooding and persistent rain can keep customers away and damage goods. Students are also taking extra steps to protect books, certificates and other documents from water damage. The experiences reflect NiMet's 2026 forecast of a longer rainy season and delayed cessation of rainfall in Lagos. For many residents, adapting now means spending more, planning every journey carefully and protecting their livelihoods whenever the skies darken.
