FOSAD Demands Minimum ₦500,000 Monthly Salary for Nigerian Lecturers
The Forum of South-East Academic Doctors has urged the Federal Government, state governments and private tertiary institutions to raise lecturers’ monthly salaries to at least ₦500,000. The group said hyperinflation and the rising cost of food, rent, transport, healthcare, electricity and school fees have severely reduced academics’ purchasing power. It warned that many lecturers are taking on multiple jobs to survive, affecting teaching, research and mentorship. FOSAD called for a salary-review system linked to inflation and cost-of-living indicators. It said better pay for lecturers is necessary to reduce brain drain, protect education quality and strengthen Nigeria’s knowledge economy.
