DSS Detains Journalist at Lagos Airport for Flying Drone Without Permit

DSS Detains Journalist at Lagos Airport for Flying Drone Without Permit

The Department of State Services confirms it detained journalist Zainab Sodiq after she was intercepted at Lagos’s Murtala Muhammed International Airport on July 6. She was found carrying an unmanned aerial vehicle en route to Abuja without the required End User Certificate. The agency says Sodiq admitted she had no authorization and, in line with national security regulations, was instructed to report to its Abuja headquarters on July 8 as the investigation continues. She was allowed to board her flight due to a prior engagement in the capital. The DSS emphasizes its authority to impound and sanction anyone operating a drone without approval, citing privacy and safety concerns. It also reassures the public of its commitment to the rule of law and professional conduct.

I agree, this detention risks chilling press freedom and could deter future drone reporting at airports.

The DSS insists on strict permits, yet this move seems inconsistent with fostering open journalism in Nigeria.

No be small thing that DSS detains a journalist over missing End User Certificate, it sounds like an overreaction to common drone use.

Journalists planning aerial coverage should secure EUC permits in advance, and media houses must streamline permit applications to prevent future delays.
