UNIOSUN Inducts 90 Pioneer Doctors After Years of MBBS Programme Uncertainty

Osun State University has inducted 90 pioneer medical doctors and surgeons after years of uncertainty surrounding its MBBS programme. The graduates, drawn from the 2018 and 2019 sets, completed their training after the university secured final approval from the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria in March 2026. Vice-Chancellor Prof. Odunayo Adebooye recalled that the programme was cancelled in 2011 because the state could not fund a teaching hospital. It was revived in 2018, but the first set faced further uncertainty when their admission was initially declared invalid before the incoming state administration approved the programme’s continuation. Adebooye said the university later secured key accreditations from the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria and the National Universities Commission. He credited support from the Osun State Government, the university teaching hospital, staff, governing councils and the donation of the Modupe and Folorunsho Alakija Medical Research and Training Hospital. With four months left in his tenure, the vice-chancellor said the successful induction of the institution’s first doctors left him fulfilled and ready to leave office.
