Igbo Community Leader in South Africa Apologises After ‘Fake Kingship’ Sparks Violence
Solomon Ezekiel, an Igbo community leader in South Africa, has apologised for a ceremony that was wrongly interpreted as a kingship installation. He stressed that he was only appointed as a senior elder in the Eastern Cape Igbo community, not crowned as a traditional ruler. He expressed regret for the confusion and any disrespect shown to local chiefs. The misunderstanding at an East London ceremony on March 14 triggered protests, property damage and a stabbing, prompting police intervention. South African traditional authorities and Nigeria’s diplomatic missions condemned the incident. Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has since halted the practice of appointing “Eze Ndigbo” outside Igboland. Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs is working with its diplomatic channels to calm tensions and protect Nigerians abroad.
