FG Resumes Petrol Imports, Licences Six Marketers for 720,000 MT Supply

FG Resumes Petrol Imports, Licences Six Marketers for 720,000 MT Supply

The federal government, through the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), has resumed issuing petrol import licences to six major marketers. They are expected to bring in a combined 720,000 metric tonnes of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS). This policy shift moves away from reliance on local refineries. Recent industry data shows the Dangote Refinery, with 650,000 barrel-per-day capacity, currently meets about 90 percent of national petrol consumption. Licence recipients include NIPCO (120,000 MT), AA Rano (150,000 MT), Matrix (150,000 MT), Shafa (120,000 MT), Pinnacle (120,000 MT) and Bono (60,000 MT). The decision has stirred concerns among stakeholders, coming shortly after the appointment of a new NMDPRA CEO.

While adding 720,000 tonnes seems positive, relying on six marketers could still leave gaps in remote regions and spur fresh shortages.

Local transporters and filling stations should coordinate stock levels closely and plan deliveries around licensed import schedules to avoid unexpected outages.
