Inside Abuja’s Aeroplane House: The Asokoro Home Built as a Love Letter to Travel
In Abuja’s Asokoro District, an unusual house shaped like an aeroplane has become one of the city’s most recognisable architectural landmarks. The project was started in 1999 by Lebanese-Nigerian construction professional Jammal Said as a special home for his wife, who loves travelling. The building features wings, a tail and a cockpit-style section, with green and white colours reflecting the Nigerian flag. The wings contain bedrooms, while the cockpit serves as a television and gaming lounge. The property also has a kitchen, swimming pool, private mosque, guesthouse and a guard post designed like a control tower. The decades-long project involved the whole family, with Jammal’s children helping with tasks such as digging and planting trees while growing up. Although construction has continued over the years, the Aeroplane House remains a striking symbol of family, creativity and an unconventional vision of home in Abuja.
