What to Do After Eating: Healthy Habits and Mistakes to Avoid

What you do after a meal can affect digestion, comfort and blood-sugar levels. Sit upright for about 20 minutes or take a gentle 10–15 minute walk. Avoid lying down for two to three hours, slouching deeply on the sofa, tight clothing and strenuous exercise immediately after eating. You can drink water with your meal in small amounts, then have more about 30 minutes later if you are thirsty. Light chores, stretching and calm breathing can also help you stay comfortable after eating. Ginger or peppermint tea may be soothing for some people. If you experience heartburn, bloating or persistent indigestion, note the foods that trigger it and consider speaking with a healthcare professional. You do not need to avoid fruit after meals for fear that it will “ferment” in the stomach; fruit can be eaten whenever it suits your diet. Waiting around 30 minutes before brushing your teeth after acidic foods or drinks may help protect tooth enamel.
