Akume Inaugurates Technical Committee for $200bn, 4,000km Gas-Powered High-Speed Rail

Akume Inaugurates Technical Committee for $200bn, 4,000km Gas-Powered High-Speed Rail

Sen. George Akume has inaugurated a technical committee to review a $200 billion proposal for a 4,000 km integrated gas-powered high-speed rail network. The PPP project will link Lagos, Abuja, Kaduna, Kano, Port Harcourt and all 36 states under the guidance of the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission. The committee, chaired by the SGF’s Permanent Secretary for Political and Economic Affairs, brings together key ministries and agencies such as the CBN, NFIU, EFCC, NIA and the Office of the National Security Adviser. Its mandate includes funding verification, technical and legal review, regulatory compliance and risk assessment. The network is expected to enhance transport infrastructure, strengthen energy security and create over two million jobs.

With 4,000km of track and links across all 36 states, what hurdles could stall this $200bn rail proposal?

True, aligning federal and state approvals alongside steady financing for all 4,000 km will be tough.

I doubt such lofty budgets will hold without clear accountability and proven track record on mega infrastructure

Though it promises a vast network from Lagos to Kano, there's little detail on funding sources or timeline for this $200bn project.

I'm not convinced gas-powered trains are the most sustainable choice for high-speed rail in today's greener energy landscape.

It'd be wise to start phased construction sections, maybe linking two cities first, to test operations before full network rollout.
