Presidency Denies Plans to Rename Nigeria, Scrap Sharia Law
The Presidency has dismissed reports that President Bola Tinubu plans to rename Nigeria the “United States of Nigeria” and abolish Sharia law in the North. A statement by the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy called the claims fake news aimed at sowing discord and misleading Nigerians ahead of the general elections. It said the story relied on unnamed sources and was pushed by “desperate politicians” to create tension. There is no bill code-named “Project True Federation” awaiting the National Assembly by December 15. The statement also explained that constitutional amendments require support from two-thirds of both chambers of the National Assembly and approval by at least 24 state assemblies. It added that the president remains focused on economic reforms and delivering dividends to Nigerians. Nigerians were urged to disregard such inflammatory reports that could deepen political and religious divisions.
