Anambra Heavy Equipment Operators Demand Better Pay and Fair Treatment

Heavy equipment operators in Anambra State have called for improved welfare, prompt salary payments and fair treatment by employers. The operators said harassment, intimidation and suspensions without proper investigation could hurt productivity and industrial harmony. At a union meeting in Awkuzu, the Heavy Equipment Operators section of the Nigerian Union of Mine Workers said some workers receive hiring fees as low as ₦10,000 to ₦20,000, below the approved minimum of ₦30,000. The union plans to engage employers and labour leaders to push for a review to at least ₦50,000. The group also appointed seven officers to fill vacant positions and urged members to remain disciplined, united and accountable. It noted that heavy equipment operators are essential to road construction, building projects, material movement and industrial production.
