Why Babies Rotate and Turn During Labour

Why Babies Rotate and Turn During Labour

During vaginal birth, a baby does not move through the birth canal in a straight line. The pelvis is curved, so the baby must make a series of movements to fit through safely. These movements include descent into the pelvis, flexing the chin toward the chest, rotating to fit through the narrowest part, extending the head beneath the pubic bone, and rotating again so the shoulders can be delivered. Labour can take time because each stage depends on the baby's position and progress. If a health worker says the baby is still high or has not rotated, it may mean these movements are still underway. Always follow your maternity team's advice during labour.
