Five Nigerians on Schooling Alongside Children of the Super-Rich
Five Nigerians have shared contrasting experiences of attending school with children from wealthy and influential families. Some said money, family names and connections appeared to protect certain students from punishment, even after serious misconduct. One former student recalled that wealthy parents often made major donations, which allegedly made school authorities reluctant to discipline their children. Another said an expensive school normalised rule-breaking and bribery, though it dealt firmly with bullying because many students were also well-connected. Others described schools that enforced the same rules for everyone, regardless of family background. A former student said strict uniforms, limited access to gadgets and firm leadership helped reduce class-based competition and special treatment. The accounts also highlight the lasting effects of bullying, unequal discipline and the sharp differences between public and private school life in Nigeria.
