Over 30 States at Risk: NEMA Urges Urgent Flood Preparations Ahead of 2026 Rains

Over 30 States at Risk: NEMA Urges Urgent Flood Preparations Ahead of 2026 Rains

The National Emergency Management Agency has warned that more than 30 states could face severe flooding before the 2026 rainy season. Its Director-General, Zubaida Umar, called on state and local governments to step up prevention efforts immediately. She urged authorities to reinstate monthly environmental sanitation, clear blocked drains and waterways, strengthen State Emergency Management Agencies, and ensure Local Emergency Management Committees are active at the grassroots. NEMA has also rolled out a Climate-Related Risk Management framework and produced flood vulnerability maps through its Early Warning System. Umar appealed to traditional rulers, religious bodies, youth and women’s groups, the media, and the private sector to help spread flood alerts and boost community readiness. Adamawa State’s governor praised NEMA’s early warning initiatives and pledged to implement its recommendations.

With over 30 states under threat, how can local communities contribute to flood prevention before the 2026 rainy season?

Absolutely. Local groups can clear drainage channels, plant water-absorbing trees, and conduct town clean-up days before the rains.

We've heard similar warnings last year but most states still lack proper drainage maintenance. Early calls for action seem to be ignored.

Sounds urgent, yet local authorities often scramble only after flooding begins, not ahead of the rainy season.

State agencies should map flood hotspots, clear obstructed waterways, and establish sandbag distribution points weeks before heavy rains arrive.
