NBA Draft 2026: Nigeria Tops African Heritage Selections with Six Picks

The 2026 NBA Draft in Brooklyn showcased the growing impact of African talent, with over ten players of African heritage chosen across two rounds. Nigeria led the continent by producing six draftees. Felix Okpara and Ugonna Onyenso became the second Nigerian duo ever picked in the same draft. Prospects with ties to the Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, Ghana and the Central African Republic also heard their names called. First-round standouts included AJ Dybantsa (Congo), Nate Ament (Rwanda), Ebuka Okorie and Zuby Ejiofor. In the second round, Otega Oweh, Felix Okpara, Tobi Lawal and Ugonna Onyenso secured NBA opportunities. Germany’s Jack Kayil (Ghanaian heritage) and France’s Narcisse Ngoy (CAR ties) further highlighted Africa’s expanding presence in the league.

I'm not convinced Nigeria leading with six picks is sustainable if infrastructure and youth programs don't keep pace.
