IED Threat Delays Rescue of Abducted Prospective NYSC Members in Imo
Security operatives say they have located a suspected kidnappers’ camp in Imo State but delayed a direct rescue operation after intelligence indicated that the area may be mined with improvised explosive devices. The Imo State police commissioner said drones helped identify the suspected location after troops trailed the gunmen into the bush. He said security agencies were preparing to deploy armoured personnel carriers and bulldozers to rescue the victims safely. The prospective corps members were travelling from Ibadan to NYSC orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom when gunmen attacked their buses along the Owerri-Onitsha Road in Umunoha on Thursday. Parents dispute the police account that 10 people were rescued, saying those passengers escaped during the attack and that 20 prospective corps members remained in captivity as of Saturday.
