US Proposes 12.5% Tariffs on Eight African Countries Over Forced-Labour Compliance
Washington plans new 12.5% duties on exports from Algeria, Angola, Egypt, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Nigeria and South Africa. The Office of the United States Trade Representative says these nations failed to enforce bans on goods made with forced labour. The measure is under review and has not yet taken effect. If approved, most products from these eight countries will face the tariff. This policy marks a shift from past trade measures, focusing specifically on supply-chain labour standards rather than traditional trade imbalances. I don’t see any forced labour in Nigeria. Poverty forces many into risky work. A tariff hike on Nigerian exports would worsen poverty and push more people into hazardous jobs.
