UN Warns 35 Million Nigerians Could Face Acute Hunger in Upcoming Lean Season

UN Warns 35 Million Nigerians Could Face Acute Hunger in Upcoming Lean Season

The United Nations warns that around 35 million Nigerians may face acute food insecurity during this year’s lean season from June to August. The burden falls heavily in the North, where many families already struggle to feed their children. If assistance is further delayed, millions could be forced to reduce meals, sell assets, or withdraw children from school. An estimated 6.4 million children in North-west and North-east Nigeria risk acute malnutrition. The UN and its partners are appealing for urgent funding to scale up life-saving aid. Of the $516 million requested in the 2026 Humanitarian Response Plan, only $215 million has been received so far, leaving many communities in peril.

I agree aid is urgent, but wahala doesn't respect regions—other parts also face hunger we barely hear about.

Local farmers' cooperatives could distribute surplus grains more efficiently if supported with proper funding and transport solutions before lean months.
