Why Do New Testament Churches Use Anointing Oil? A Biblical Perspective
In the New Testament church, anointing oil serves as a simple, God-given ordinance for healing the sick. It symbolizes consecration and points to the Holy Spirit, while true healing comes through faith in Jesus and the prayer of faith. Scripture teaches that when someone is ill, the elders pray over them and anoint them with oil in the Lord’s name, and “the prayer of faith shall save the sick” (James 5:14–15). Jesus also sent His disciples to anoint and heal many who were sick (Mark 6:13). Beyond physical healing, the Bible describes a lasting spiritual anointing. Believers receive “an unction from the Holy One” (1 John 2:20) and “the anointing…abides in you” (1 John 2:27). Jesus Himself declared, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me” (Luke 4:18).
