5 Nigerians Share the Pain of Growing Up With a Favoured Sibling
Parental favouritism can leave lasting resentment between siblings. Five Nigerians share how unequal rules, praise and opportunities made them feel unseen in their own homes. One contributor recalls being compared constantly with a high-achieving brother and feeling overlooked when plans were made to send him abroad. Another says his father rejected his request for an Army school, then found the money when his brother made the same request. Others describe sons being excused from chores and disrespect because they were boys, or daughters being pushed into mothering their brothers. While the siblings did not always cause the problem, the unequal treatment created jealousy, anger and painful distance.
