Reflecting on Migration, Xenophobia and Nigeria’s Future: A Call to Action Ahead of 2027 Elections
Migration is part of the human story. Recent calls in South Africa and Ghana for Nigerians to “return home” should spark deep reflection rather than anger. We need to examine why so many citizens feel forced to leave and how we are perceived abroad. Nigeria is richly endowed with oil, fertile land, solid minerals and a vibrant people. Yet poor leadership and weak institutions drive talented professionals and youth into the diaspora seeking dignity, security, education and healthcare. Forced migration born of hopelessness is the real tragedy. With the 2027 elections approaching, intentional voting is crucial. Citizens must reject ethnic appeals, resist vote buying and guard against electoral fraud. We should scrutinize candidates on integrity, competence and vision for development. True national renewal requires unity beyond tribe or religion, active citizenship and personal integrity. If we vote wisely and demand accountable leadership, Nigeria can harness its immense potential and become a place where citizens stay by choice, not necessity.
