Plateau’s Education Overhaul: Solar-Powered SUBEB Hub and Hundreds of New Classrooms
Governor Caleb Mutfwang has launched a major drive to revive public education in Plateau State. Speaking in Dogon Dutse, he announced the distribution of learning materials and commissioned a new solar-powered administrative block at the SUBEB headquarters. He said his administration’s legitimacy depends on reviving schools and making public institutions parents’ first choice. Since July 2023, Mutfwang’s team has built 397 new classrooms and renovated 557 more. Thousands of desks and chairs are being rolled out, and 33 motorized boreholes have been drilled to improve sanitation across learning centres. The 19-office solar-powered SUBEB hub was funded through overhead allocations, showcasing a shift towards sustainable resource management. At the commissioning ceremony, Mutfwang honoured pupils who excelled at the National Basic Education School Sports Competition. Education Commissioner Dr. Kachollom Gang called the rollout a “triple milestone” for modern teaching. UBEC North Central Director Elder Edward Abalaka praised the state’s fiscal discipline and timely funding as key to eradicating illiteracy in the region.
