My First Essence Fest Experience: Michelle Obama, Cardi B and a Weekend of Black Excellence

My First Essence Fest Experience: Michelle Obama, Cardi B and a Weekend of Black Excellence — 1 of 17
1 / 17

As a first-time attendee, I headed to New Orleans for the annual Essence Festival of Culture over the Fourth of July weekend. I explored the neon-lit streets, experienced local bars and got ready for three days of Black creativity and joy. Day one opened with powerful panels from Dr. Bernice King and Dr. Ilyasah Shabazz. Michelle Obama joined Keke Palmer on stage to discuss style and her new book. Later, Kehlani, Latto and Cardi B lit up the Superdome with unforgettable performances. On day two, Babyface had the crowd singing every lyric while Patti LaBelle delivered powerhouse vocals. Brandy and Monica reunited on stage and surprised fans by inviting MC Lyte and Yo-Yo for a 90s celebration. The final day featured a moving Aaliyah tribute curated by Missy Elliott, a funk party with George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic, and hip-hop legends Public Enemy. T.I. closed the festival backed by the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra. If you plan to attend next time, arrive early to secure your spot.

Did the high-profile talks by Michelle Obama really stand out, or did the neon street energy steal the show for you?

It all sounds vibrant, yet I'm not convinced the local culture didn't get overshadowed by big-name headliners.

Sure, Essence Fest is fun, but calling neon-lit streets and bars a genuine measure of Black excellence feels a bit shallow.

If you're heading to next year's festival, map out your must-see panels and reserve bar visits for evening downtime.
