Advocate Urges FG to Stop Costly Private-School Graduation Ceremonies and Levies

A human-rights advocate has urged the Federal Government to regulate private schools over compulsory graduation ceremonies, customised books and other charges that he says are placing parents under severe financial pressure. He alleged that some schools demand between ₦80,000 and ₦200,000 for graduation gowns, photographs, outfits and celebration fees for pupils moving between non-terminal classes. He also criticised compulsory party levies and the practice of forcing parents to buy school-specific textbooks and exercise books. The advocate called for a nationwide policy to stop non-terminal graduation ceremonies, curb arbitrary levies, keep textbooks reusable and allow parents to buy learning materials from affordable open-market sellers. He cited reported restrictions on such ceremonies in Imo State as a model for wider action.
