Study Links Heavy Screen Time to Poorer Learning and Mental Health in Children
A major review involving more than 2.8 million children has linked heavier screen use with poorer school performance, weaker language development and more emotional and behavioural difficulties. The Canada-led research reviewed evidence from 23 previous studies across 64 countries. It found associations between high use of gaming, social media and streaming platforms and anxiety, depression, aggression, attention difficulties and problems relating with peers. Researchers said the links were as strong as, or stronger than, some established influences on child development, including family socioeconomic circumstances. However, the findings do not prove that screen time causes these outcomes, as children already facing difficulties or challenging home conditions may spend more time on screens.
