Mariam Zakariyah Makes History as UI’s First Female Bursar

Mariam Zakariyah Makes History as UI’s First Female Bursar

The University of Ibadan has appointed Mariam Adetoun Zakariyah as its 10th Bursar. She is the first woman to lead the institution’s bursary department in its 78-year history. Zakariyah joined the Bursary Department in August 2000 as an officer in the Loans and Advances Unit. Over 24 years, she advanced through roles including Senior Accountant, Finance Officer in faculties and the Postgraduate School, Chief Accountant and Deputy Bursar. Her reforms include a merit-based receipt system to cut paper use and block revenue leakages, clearing backlogs in financial statements and improving salary processing via GIFMIS monitoring. She also helped manage the NELFUND refund process and supported the acquisition of the university’s transmission electron microscope.

It's impressive, but I wonder if the bursary department will actually change its culture with her appointment.

To support Zakariyah's success, her office could host financial literacy workshops for students and staff across all departments.
