How Lecturers’ Grade Extortion Undermines Nigerian Tertiary Education

Grade extortion, commonly called “sorting,” continues to undermine academic integrity in some Nigerian tertiary institutions. Students may face pressure to pay money, buy compulsory materials or attend costly private tutorials in exchange for marks. Some students also report threats of failed courses, delayed project approvals and other academic penalties when they refuse improper demands. Sexual harassment linked to grades is especially harmful, leaving victims afraid to report lecturers who hold power over their results. These practices punish hardworking students and place extra financial pressure on families. Institutions need confidential reporting channels, independent disciplinary panels and firm enforcement of rules against extortion and sexual harassment. Without credible action, public confidence in higher-education qualifications may continue to decline.
