Jay-Jay Okocha Explains How His Famous Nickname Began — 1 of 2
1 / 2

Former Super Eagles captain Austin Okocha has explained how the famous name “Jay-Jay” began long before his professional football career. He said the nickname came from childhood, when football was the main pastime in his neighbourhood. With two members of his family known as Austin, people used “Jay-Jay” to tell them apart. Okocha later adopted the name officially while playing abroad, where people found Augustine harder to pronounce. He jokingly added that his brothers still deserve royalties for the nickname. The Nigerian football icon won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations and Olympic gold in 1996, earning 73 caps and scoring 14 goals for the Super Eagles.
