Survey Links Poor Academic Performance to Depression Risk Among Undergraduates
A survey of undergraduate students has found that many believe persistent poor academic performance can harm students’ mental health and, in severe cases, contribute to suicidal thoughts. Eight of the 10 respondents said repeated setbacks in examinations, declining CGPA, and pressure to meet expectations can cause stress, low self-esteem, anxiety, and hopelessness. Some also identified constant comparison with high-performing peers as a source of emotional distress. Other respondents argued that academic challenges should encourage resilience rather than lead to despair. They agreed, however, that students need early support from family, friends, lecturers, and professional counsellors. Respondents urged higher institutions to strengthen counselling services, promote mental-health awareness, and provide safe, stigma-free spaces for students facing academic pressure.
